BLAST
FORCES PICKUP OFF ROAD
A mine supervisor suffered minor injuries and another
worker escaped unharmed when the pickup truck they
occupied was forced off the road following a flyrock
incident on March 6th in Barton, Maryland.
The incident occurred at about 3:15 pm when a blast
to break rock and recover coal sent broken shale and
rock into a nearby sediment and storm water pond.
Sediment already in the pond was immediately displaced,
forcing earthen materials over a hill into a tributary
of Moore's Run and onto a coal haul road. The pickup
truck was then pushed off the road and about 100 feet
over a slope, however, the pickup remained upright.
The injured man was taken to the local Garrett Memorial
Hospital for examination and was released. The incident
remains under investigation by the Bureau of Mines.

EXPLOSIVES CLOSES RAMP AT
NASHVILLE INTERCHANGE
An interchange ramp was closed for several hours in
the early morning of March 6 after a crew installing
fiber optic cable discovered explosives at Briley
Parkway-Interstate 40 near Nashville International
Airport.
Police were called to the scene and closed off the
area while the dynamite was safely removed from the
side of the road.
The State Fire Marshal's office is now pursuing enforcement
action against the construction company suspected
of placing the explosives as part of an interchange
expansion project two years ago.
OLD DYNAMITE CAUSES EVACUATION
Nearly all the residents of a small northern Iowa
town were evacuated on March 6th after dynamite was
found in an old county shed. About 70 sticks of dynamite,
thought to be around 60 years old, were found in the
shed located in the southwest part of Woden.
The dynamite was safely destroyed by an explosives
expert with the state fire marshal's office. It is
believe that the explosives may have been used to
blow up stumps for road projects.
